Coloured PPF vs Vinyl Wrap for a Colour Change

Both change the colour of your car. Only one protects the paint like PPF does. Here's the difference.

October 2026 · Ghost Automotive

If you want a new colour without a repaint, you have two options: a vinyl wrap or coloured paint protection film. Both look great when they're installed properly. The difference is what happens after.

Vinyl wrap

Cast vinyl is thinner and comes in a huge range of colours and finishes, including colour-shift, chrome, and carbon textures. It changes the look and offers light protection, but a rock chip can still go through it.

Coloured PPF

Coloured PPF is made from the same thick urethane as clear paint protection film. You get the colour change and the impact protection in one layer, and light scratches heal on their own. The colour range is smaller than vinyl, and it takes longer to install.

Which one makes sense

  • You want the most colour choice or a special finish: vinyl.
  • You want a new colour and real protection for a car you plan to keep: coloured PPF.
  • You might sell the car soon: either works. Both come off and leave the factory paint underneath.

Coloured PPF usually takes 5 to 7 days and a full vinyl colour change 3 to 5 days, so both start with a consultation where you can see samples in person.
